Environmental

South Dakota has some of the most common-sense environmental laws in the nation. While there are environmental laws and permits that do a great job of protecting our resources for the future, South Dakota has been and will always be an agriculture friendly state. The environmental laws at the state level apply to those operations that are over 1000 animal units. Most counties in South Dakota have “County Zoning” regulations which, in some cases, can be more restrictive in number of animal units and environmental requirements. It is important to learn the county zoning regulations in your county. The State of South Dakota and its producers recognize manure as an important resource for crop and possibly even for energy production. There are currently several private engineers and crop consultants experienced in working with livestock operations in South Dakota to assist producers in managing manure and meeting state and local regulations. NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Services) also has a “Nutrient Management Team” which provides assistance to producers who are participating in USDA/NRCS cost-share programs such as EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program).
